Alhamdulillah, our first Fashion Show was a great success ! We were lucky enough with the attendance of The Lord Mayor of Adelaide, Dr Jane Lomax Smith. A huge thank you to our wonderful sponsors which were Ghan Boutique, Hassana Collection and also Naducaa. Furthermore,  we appreciated all Volunteers from the models, makeup artists (Mel Jones & Marie), event helpers, photographer and the MWASA Interns for all their hard work and dedication, ensuring our success. Finally, thank you to Nurhayati Md Rahim for her kind contribution. This was a great reminder that “Together we are stronger”.

victor harbour (CHSP)

There’s nothing better than fresh air and a walk with friends as our Seniors recently did. Remember to take advantage of the good weather and get moving outdoors to stay active. Our group thoroughly enjoyed their trip, exploring Victor Harbour and Granite Island, even though they did have to compete with the wind. What a fun day.

food and mood (CHSP)

Eating well can make you happy as it gives you more energy, helps you sleep better and improves your concentration. MWASA had the pleasure to invite Sr Samar Ibrahim, Health Educator from the Australian Red Cross to share with the seniors’ tips and strategies on how to improve their mental health through food and the type of food for healthy digestion.

It was indeed an informative and beneficial session for the seniors.

The SETS women enjoyed the River Torrens for their picnic location. They took advantage of the good weather and made the most of this fun social occasion.

mum & daughter cake decorating (SETS)

It’s a piece of cake!

In this session, the ladies required no professional decorating skills. Individual skill was not important as the highlight was the wonderful opportunity for mums and daughters to bond while decorating gorgeous looking cakes together.

They obviously had fun. The ladies were amazingly creative with their cakes that eating them at the end was almost a shame. A big well done to everyone!

mount lofty - botanic garden (CHSP)

The Walk at Mount Lofty Botanic Garden was a much-awaited trip by seniors!

Despite the wet weather, we are glad that the seniors loved and enjoyed being out among the green and breathing the fresh air along the relaxing walk and even requested to revisit for a spring season! It was such a nice activity to reconnect with nature and broaden your horizon with the serenity surrounding.

Dementia talk (CHSP)

A little support makes a big difference!

For Dementia Action Week, MWASA held a talk for our seniors to show them a little bit of support! It is important for our seniors not only to recognise early signs, but also to know that they can still live an active and healthy life!

Thank you to Jenny Adams from Dementia Australia for sharing your knowledge with our seniors about brain health and dementia!

water polo (SETS)

Our SETS youth had a ball underwater yesterday. The girls were bubbling in excitement to play against each other in a game. We are having another water polo session next Tuesday, 11th October! Be sure to contact us if you’re interested!

cup painting (CHSP)

Creativity is the key to healthy aging. Being able to focus on creating patterns and experimenting with colour is an excellent opportunity for our CHSP seniors to exercise their motor abilities while being able to calm their mind.

Our seniors especially loved being able to express themselves and were particularly excited to create their own personalised mugs. Be sure to spot these special mugs in future events.

mindfulness and relaxation workshop 2 (SETS)

There are always new things to stress about, whether it’s work or school or home life. That’s why MWASA held a Mindfulness and Relaxation workshop for out SETS ladies.

We invited Jennifer Taylor, Mental Health Counsellor from Skylight, to give our ladies tips on how to lead a mentally healthier and happier lifestyle. Dealing with stress can be tough and it often takes a toll on our body, so it’s important to reduce that stress by relaxing your mind and body! Our ladies learnt about mindful breathing techniques, muscle tension relaxation and many other useful exercises.

Thank you to Taylor for the amazing tips, we’ll be sure to practice them.

viet food intro

Our new Foundation Skills teacher, took the time to show our students a little bit of Vietnamese culture! She introduced our students to rice paper rolls, which is famous for its rich flavour and freshness.
While rice paper rolls commonly have ingredients such as lettuce, carrots vermicelli noodles and meat, she emphasized that students are can have whatever they want in their rolls to suit their own tastes.
We had a “roll” doing this activity!

First aid workshop

It is very important that our seniors are reminded on how they can seek medical assistance and notice warning signs before an incident happens.

Big thank you to Ivonne Callow from Allity Aged Care for the informative session on first aid; our seniors are extremely grateful for the reminders and knowledge shared. Emergency situations are often happening, so we’re glad to have the knowledge on how to respond to them.

refugee week preparation (English)

Food is language known by many; it’s beautiful, diverse and always evolving!

In collaboration with Adelaide Central Market and Red Cross Australia, we took our students ‘Learning English Through Cooking’ to the stage to introduce ‘A World of Flavours’. We held a live cooking demonstration of ethnic foods; kibbeh, injera and milk barfi by our very own students. The platters of Middle Eastern, East African and Sri Lankan delights were amazing to taste, and we’re sure everyone there could have said the same.

This #RefugeeWeek we’re standing in solidarity with all refugees and asylum seekers in Australia! At MWASA, we believe that everyone deserves the opportunity for community and healing, and we will do our best to continue to support that. Big thank you to the participants, volunteers, guests, MWASA staff, Central Market and the team from Red Cross for co-hosting this incredible event .

Chair yoga (CHSP)

Did you know you can stay fit just by sitting down?

We got our CHSP seniors to try out chair yoga to help with stress, pain, and fatigue!
With age, we find often find ourselves being physically limited and weaker; we experience less flexibility, issues with joints and illnesses. So we offered our seniors to try chair yoga to build their flexibility, strength and stamina. Our seniors really worked up a sweat by the end of the session!

Thank you to Danielle for your guidance and encouragements! We greatly appreciate this session and can’t wait for more.

cross culture education - rostrevor college

It was a pleasure holding yet another Cross-Cultural training workshop for the students of Rostrevor College at Masjid Abu Bakr Assiddiq (Wandana Mosque).

Sr. Flora Chanisheff led the workshop with discussions about Islam and Muslims, which was followed by a Q&A session and a tour around the mosque. Our workshops aim to create a comfortable environment for the students to ask questions not only to expand their knowledge, but to clear any misconceptions they might have. We hope we were able to help the students leave with a better perspective and an open mind!

Big thank you to Wandana Mosque for hosting us! Thank you also to the students from Rostrevor College for participating.

foundation skills students visit the sa museum

Last month, we took our class of Foundation Skills English students to the Art Gallery of South Australia! We had a look at the art on display by Nora Heyson and her father, Hans Heyson, both famous Australia painters. The students were very excited to be able to see paintings close up as we had been talking about both painters during class.

It was a relaxing break from English classes as the students were able to spend some quiet time admiring the artworks!

The visit has inspired us to visit the painters’ family home in Hahndorf, so we planned for a visit for the next class outing.

foundation skills students take a trip to the cedars

A trip to the Art Gallery inspired our English students to visit family home of artists Nora and Hans Heyson, The Cedars in Hahndorf!

It was lovely day for a drive through the Adelaide Hills, the excellent weather and warm sunshine made the perfect trip for visiting too! Once there, our students had an amazing time touring the art studio, gardens and family home. This experience connected us all to this talented family and gave our students the opportunity to practice their English! They had no qualms about asking the tour guide some questions and talking about the artwork on display.

We hope to be able to provide more opportunities for more of our students in the future!

chsp seniors go mini golfing at west beach!

Earlier this month, we took our seniors to the West Beach Mini-Golf course to enjoy a day outside under the warm sunshine. It was an exciting for our seniors who were eager to return to the golf course after the fun time they and last year! This time, seniors enjoyed a friendly competition among themselves. They had spent an equal amount of time posing and snapping pictures with amusing statues!

We spent time after to have a nice lurch to catch-up with friends and catch some rest after the tough competition! We’re excited to hold more events for our Muslim seniors in the future.
