Mothers and daughters enjoyed a meaningful day in the kitchen, working side by side to prepare delicious meals while building practical cooking skills, learning about budgeting and meal planning, and creating lasting memories together. It was wonderful to see families supporting one another, sharing laughs, and celebrating their achievements over a meal they created together.

Our Youth Movie Day was more than just watching Moana, it was a reminder that courage begins with taking the first step. Through Moana’s journey of resilience, leadership, and believing in herself, our young people were encouraged to dream big, overcome challenges, and embrace every opportunity that comes their way.

After the movie, the conversations continued over lunch as participants reflected on the lessons they had learned, shared their favourite moments, and connected with one another. A day filled with inspiration, laughter, and memories that will last long after the credits rolled. 🍿

Our youth were inspired by Nawal as she shared her remarkable journey of starting a new life in Australia, learning English, overcoming challenges, and rebuilding a brighter future with her family. Her story was a powerful reminder that with resilience, determination, and hope, anything is possible.

Through her engaging puppet performance, Nawal also showed how creativity and storytelling can inspire others, build connections, and spread positive messages throughout the community. 🌟

Our Hair Care Workshop gave participants the chance to learn practical tips for healthier hair, watch live styling and haircut demonstrations, and gain confidence in caring for their hair at home. It was wonderful to see everyone learning, sharing experiences, and leaving with new skills, fresh haircuts, and big smiles! ✨

Our SETS Youth got creative these school holidays by mixing their own Virgin Mojitos, painting colourful masterpieces, and enjoying delicious treats together. A fun afternoon filled with creativity, laughter, and great memories! 💛

Our SETS Youth rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on Churro Making Workshop, learning new cooking skills, kitchen safety, and teamwork every step of the way. The best part? Enjoying their delicious cinnamon-sugar churros together! 💛👩‍🍳

Our participants recently attended an informative Legal Information Session, where they learned about their legal rights, how to access free legal support, and the services available to help individuals and families navigate legal matters in Australia.

The session also raised awareness about domestic and family violence, highlighted available support services and reminded everyone that help is always available. Thank you to Julia Parkin for sharing such valuable information and to everyone who joined, asked questions and made the session engaging. 🌿

As part of Refugee Week last week, MWASA invited Dr. Mastura Alim to give a parenting talk on “Strong Mothers, Strong Families”. The discussion opened up honest reflections on parenting in a new country and what it means to raise confident daughters while navigating change, culture and expectation.

In small group conversations, many women shared personal reflections from their own journeys – moments of uncertainty, resilience and rebuilding life far from home. These stories surfaced naturally, reminding us that connection often begins with simply being heard.

The day concluded with an Eid lunch, providing space for continued connection beyond the session itself and reinforcing the role of shared cultural gatherings in community wellbeing.

Our Chi Ball wellbeing session offered participants a gentle space to slow down, reconnect with their bodies and experience the benefits of mindful movement. In a calm and supportive environment, women were encouraged to pause and focus on self-care and inner strength.

Our Bake & Bond session brought mums and youth together to create delicious Dubai chocolate brownies and a variety of sweet & savoury pastries, but the real magic was in the connections made along the way. From sharing recipes and life skills to laughing over decorating, every moment was filled with teamwork, creativity, and support.

Mums shared their wisdom, young people brought fresh energy, and together they created more than just delicious treats. They built confidence, strengthened bonds and reminded us what community truly feels like. 🥐✨

Knowledge is power! 🏠💪 Our SETS women recently had a Renting Awareness session with Stephney Sproull from RentRightSA, learning the ins and outs of renting in Australia. From understanding lease agreements to knowing their tenant rights and how rental bonds work, this session helped our women feel confident, informed and independent. 💬✨

Eid is always sweeter when it’s celebrated together 💛
Before enjoying the beautiful feast, our gathering began with a meaningful origami session – folding paper cranes, a symbol of hope and healing. As each fold took shape, it served as a gentle reminder that parenting, especially in the midst of life’s challenges, calls for patience, perseverance, and self-compassion.

Through this simple yet powerful activity, our women were encouraged to pause, reflect, and reconnect with themselves and with one another. Because behind every act of care for others, there must also be kindness towards ourselves.

Khadija Alhaj shared culturally sensitive guidance on school systems, assessments, subject choices, and effective communication with teachers. Our youth had an incredible opportunity to visit the South Australian Parliament House to learn more about leadership, government, and civic participation. The group met Mira El Dannawi, who shared her inspiring journey to Parliament and encouraged young people to find their voice, be confident, and stay involved in their communities.
 
The visit concluded with a guided tour of Parliament House, giving participants insight into how government works. An empowering experience that reminded our youth that leadership begins with believing in yourself 💫

YOUTH AI Learning SESSION

Our Introduction to AI Learning Workshop gave youth a fun and eye-opening look into Artificial Intelligence. Led by our volunteer Dina Iakushina, the session explained AI in a simple, relatable way showing how it’s already part of everyday life and how it can support learning, productivity and even small online or home-based businesses.

Through hands-on activities and open discussion, our youth built practical digital skills and learned how to use technology safely and responsibly.

cENTERLINK INFORMATION SESSION

We held an informative session on Understanding the Centrelink System, covering key supports for families, jobseekers, carers and seniors. Clients gained clarity on services like Family Tax Benefit, Childcare Subsidy, Carer Payment vs Carer Allowance, and the Age Pension.
We also explored how to use MyGov and the Express Plus apps to access services with confidence.

lEARN ENGLISH THROUGH COOKING - wATERMARK

Our Learn English Through Cooking class celebrated their incredible hard work preparing the lunch orders with a well-deserved outing to Watermark Glenelg. After weeks of dedication, teamwork and commitment to the project, the group came together to enjoy a delicious lunch.

It was a special moment to recognise their achievement, share stories, capture memories and celebrate their efforts. The atmosphere was filled with joy, pride and a strong sense of community, a wonderful reminder of how much can be achieved when we work and learn together.

PREPARATION FOR MULTICULTURAL FESTIVAL 2025

Our Learn English Through Cooking class was full of teamwork, laughter, and excitement as we prepared for the Multicultural Festival. Participants cooked delicious Kufta and Dubai-chocolate brownies, sharing stories, cooking tips, and cultural traditions along the way. These dishes were later sold at the MWASA stall at the Multicultural festival, making the class an important and meaningful part of our community’s contribution.

Talk on Menapause

An informative session on perimenopause and menopause was conducted by The Australia Red Cross ‘Health In My Language’ Coordinators, supporting women to recognise early signs, manage symptoms, and care for their wellbeing through nutrition, movement, and mindful practices. The session concluded with a calming coaster-painting activity that encouraged reflection, storytelling, laughter, and genuine connection among the women. A beautiful reminder that learning and healing can happen together. ✨🌿

We recently hosted an insightful session on Building Resilience Against Depression, led by Dr Mastura Alim for our SETS women. The session focused on helping the newly-arrived refugee women recognise symptoms and ways to heal. 💬💛

Held in an open-air setting, the discussion created a relaxed and welcoming space where participants shared experiences about supporting mental health and reminded each other that no one walks this journey alone. 🌸

Knafe MAKING

Our Learn English Through Cooking class came together to make knafeh, a beloved Middle Eastern dessert made with crispy shredded pastry, warm melted cheese and fragrant sweet syrup. As we mixed, baked and shared, participants practised everyday English through real conversation and teamwork. The session was filled with learning and the joy of enjoying a beautiful cultural treat we created together. 

Fruit Platter Competition

Our Fruit Platter Competition brought together youth and mothers for a fun, hands-on activity where each group had just 20 minutes to design the most beautiful platter. 🌸
From palm trees to playful patterns, every creation reflected teamwork, creativity, and community spirit, with plenty of smiles all around! 🥝🍇

Understanding Islamic Will

Our recent Understanding the Islamic Will session brought mothers and daughters into meaningful conversations about legacy, faith, and family. Br Belal Moraby from Crescent Lawyers delved into Islamic estate planning, including Wills, power of attorney, and advance care directives. Strengthening knowledge and deepening family understanding as they learned together.

Lunch at the Lawn

Our youth and their mums enjoyed a beautiful picnic at the ground of Government House for the Lunch on the Lawns session. 🤍

It was a day filled with shared moments and discovery, exploring the historic Government House and its stunning grounds, and enjoying guided garden tours led by the Friends of the Botanic Gardens of Adelaide.

Led by Dr. Aisha Azlina Abu Baker, we created a powerful space to reflect, connect, and heal. Together, participants unpacked the deep emotional impact of displacement, while gaining practical tools for coping, recovery, and community care.

Our cultural cooking session brought newly arrived refugee women together to learn, practice and create Mantu, a traditional dumpling dish in a supportive, hands-on environment.

Women Refugee Week

This year Refugee Week, MWASA proudly highlighted our weekly sewing sessions, a space where refugee women come together not only to sew, but to heal, connect, and grow. Titled “Finding Freedom in Every Stitch,” the session brought stories of culture, resilience, and new beginnings to life. As the women sewed oven mitts and mats, they wove powerful narratives of survival, strength, and hope into every thread.

For many, sewing is more than a skill. It is a path to emotional healing, independence, and self-expression. Through each stitch, these women reclaim a sense of purpose and control, while building meaningful connections in a supportive community.

We were honoured to receive friends from the Department of Home Affairs, who listened to their incredible journeys first hand. The women expressed deep gratitude for MWASA’s unwavering support and the safe space that has helped them find their voice, and their place, once again.

DFV Session with LSC

MWASA hosted an insightful session with the Legal Services Commission, where participants received expert guidance on Protection Visas and their legal rights in Australia. The speakers provided clear, tailored advice, debunking misconceptions and empowering the women with crucial information about their visa status and entitlements. A valuable opportunity for participants to ask questions, gain clarity, and feel more confident navigating their legal rights in their new home. ⚖️💡

Parenting - Raising a Daughter

Our recent session, led by the inspiring Nisreen, offered a heartwarming and insightful look into the unique journey of raising teenage daughters through the lens of Islamic values. From building emotional intelligence to setting healthy boundaries, Nisreen shared practical, faith-based strategies for fostering trust, communication, and empathy within the family.

Mothers left the session feeling empowered, armed with tools to better support their daughters through these critical years. The open discussion allowed participants to connect, share experiences, and gain confidence in their parenting journey.

Our recent well-being session was a soothing retreat, where women came together to explore the healing powers of natural oils. 🌸 Guided by Sister Flora from Amanah Institute, we explored the benefits of natural oils – from glowing skin to emotional well-being, and enjoyed calming, hands-on massage techniques that left us feeling truly restored. 🧖‍♀️💆‍♀️

It was a beautiful blend of learning, self-care, and connection, with everyone leaving feeling more relaxed, refreshed, and ready to embrace mindfulness in everyday life. 🌺

Parenting - Personal Care

🌸✨ Empowerment from the inside out at our “Glow from Within” session! 🌿✨ Mothers and daughters had an amazing time focusing on self-care, confidence, and skin health. The workshop, conducted by our volunteer Dina Iakushina, emphasised the connection between physical health, emotional well-being, and a positive self-image.

Participants learned how to nurture their skin naturally, with practical tips on hydration, diet, and stress management. Plus, they got hands-on experience making their own all-natural, halal-friendly moisturiser! 💧🌱

Our Dubai Chocolate Making Session was the ultimate recipe for joy — blending creativity, laughter, and a whole lot of chocolate! 🍫💖

Youth and their amazing mums teamed up to craft mouth-watering pistachio and knafeh-filled chocolates, turning the kitchen into a space of teamwork and genuine connection. 👩‍👧

It wasn’t just about making sweets — it was about bonding, learning together, and making memories that will last way longer than the chocolates (which definitely didn’t last long 😋).

Parenting - Carer Talk

Our recent session on emotional and psychological support for carers became a beautiful moment of mother-daughter connection. 🌸🤝

Led by Leena from Carer SA, the session created a safe, nurturing space to explore the emotional challenges of care-giving; from stress and burnout to the quiet moments of isolation. But what stood out most was the strength and warmth shared between mothers and daughters, supporting each other not just as carers, but as family. 💬💕

These moments of learning and connection remind us how powerful it is to grow together, as carers, as women, and as family.🤝💖

Women - Community Iftar at KCC

It was truly heartening to see people from all backgrounds come together to break fast and celebrate the spirit of unity and cultural diversity. The Welcoming Community Iftar provided a wonderful opportunity for people to learn the significance of fasting during Ramadan. By sharing the experience of breaking fast together, everyone gained a greater understanding of the values of self-discipline, reflection, and community support that fasting embodies.

Another successful round of our ‘Road to Getting Your L’ session was led by experienced driving instructor Abeer. The session provided newly-arrived women with essential driving tips and a deeper understanding into local driving laws and road culture. From understanding speed limits to handling stressful traffic situations, Abeer shared practical advice to help the participants feel more confident and safe behind the wheel.
